Frequent Flyer Rewards

This is what the programs are all about - frequent flyer rewards. Gone are the days that your miles simply added up to a free ticket to the east coast, or maybe a ticket upgrade. These days there are many ways that they can be used from non-travel rewards to even donating or auctioning them. Redeeming points for travel rewards are of course still the mainstay of the frequent flyer programs, but even these can be combined with such things as stopover rewards. With the introduction of the airline alliances, it is now easy for members to be able to earn far more frequent flyer rewards than ever. Of course at the other end of the scale they are also able to redeem them for their international travel.

Frequent flyer rewards can be earned in so many different ways and a great number of them are totally unrelated to air travel. Earning points is now commonplace by using credit cards which are partnered with the airlines. By using this as your daily spending card you are very soon able to accrue valuable amounts of frequent flyer rewards that can be redeemed for worthwhile goods or services or even cash back. Usually these cards are dollar for mile value, and often during nominated periods there will be special offers at participating businesses offering double or even five times points for each dollar spent.

Earning the frequent flyer rewards is one thing but spending them is another. Some people admittedly have become quite obsessive about their points. One has to be careful of not overspending with the excuse that the purchase did offer a lovely amount of frequent flyer mileage. More and more people though are choosing to redeem their rewards for either cash back offers or one of the many exciting products that will be offered. It is important that the programs keep their standards high with the quality of goods or services offered as rewards, or customers will soon be enticed by one of the competitors.

Some of the more common frequent flyer rewards that are offered are:

1. Extra air travel miles - for those saving their rewards for a round-the-world trip then this is an absolute must 2. Hotel accommodation 3. Rental car discounts 4. Lifestyle rewards - weekend get-aways, resorts, spas, health packages, adventure holidays 5. Restaurants - lovely intimate dinners for two at top class restaurants 6. Gift certificates 7. Members-only discounts 8. Specialized merchandise from online and offline retailers 9. Wine packages 10. Ticket upgrades

These are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other frequent flyer rewards that are offered but they will all vary from program to program. Most airlines will offer such things as ticket upgrades, priority check-ins as well as baggage handling, and the use of the first-class lounges, or at least member's lounges. This is where one can go to remove oneself from all the hustle and bustle of airport queues and frayed tempers.

It is an interesting fact that a great deal of reward points are never redeemed. People say that they forget, or that they just can't understand the system. For whatever reason, it is a shame to see the frequent flyer rewards go to waste. Fortunately if it looks like they are not going to be used, then they can be donated to charity and there are several charities in the US that benefit greatly from donated miles, particularly the Red Cross. They are then able to redeem the miles to send volunteers to places that they are needed.
