Frequent Flyer Miles - An Overview
Frequent flyer miles are a mileage point that is assigned by an airline company to say 'thank you' for flying with us and encouraging you to fly with them again. Eventually, after many trips, you would have been assigned enough frequent flyer miles to make it worthwhile redeeming them for either a ticket upgrade or if you have sufficient miles, then even a free ticket. The more you fly within your frequent flyer program the more miles you earn and the more choice you have in redeeming them. This is the basis for all frequent flyer awards systems, but from here on they can differ enormously. It pays to know how your frequent flyer miles work, and how they can be increased as quickly as possible. Once you achieve a certain number of miles, you are usually able to join elite status which is also generally divided into a couple of different classifications. Each level will have associated benefits assigned to it. It is these little extras that make the world of difference in your flying experience, particularly if flying takes up a large part of your time. Once you have achieved certain status with your frequent flyer miles you are able to take advantage of member's lounges, priority check-in and baggage handling, ticket upgrades, special rates at resorts and car hires and the list goes on and on. Frequent flyer miles have in fact almost become a universal currency, particularly now with so many airline alliances making it easy for consumers to link their domestic and international flights under the one frequent flyer banner. The international flights of course are the ones that award the most flyer miles, and the alliances have made it a lot easier for people to earn enough miles so that they are able to redeem them for round-the-world airfares amongst other things Frequent flyer miles have historically been earned by air travel as well as from participating car rental companies and hotels. This made a great trio, and for many years this was the only way that frequent flyer miles could be earned. But how things have changed. There is almost a frequent flyer frenzy happening in the homes of normal people, and often by people that don't fly and have no intention of redeeming their frequent flyer miles for air travel. Earning frequent flyer miles can be as simple as changing to a credit card from a participating airline and banking institution. Then for every dollar that is spent on the card, a frequent flyer mileage point, usually of an equivalent value is accrued to your frequent flyer account. Frequent flyer miles can also be accrued from an enormous number of retailers, gas stations, abd restaurants, in fact you name it and there is probably frequent flyer miles attached to their services. Accruing the frequent flyer miles is one thing, but naturally the best part is in the spending of them. Gone are the days that the miles could only be redeemed for travel or upgrades. Now you are also able to redeem your miles for cash back, adventure holidays, resorts as well as an enticing list of very much sought-after consumables. Providing one doesn't go overboard in maxing their credit card just to earn frequent flyer miles, then this is one system that it pays to belong to.
