American Frequent Flyer - Fond Memories Of The Beginings!

The American frequent flyer program is now 20 years old and it is the original travel awards scheme that started it all. Over the ensuing years, it has grown and prospered, and is now regarded as the world's largest. Even though there has been many changes over the years to the American frequent flyer, the basic program is as follows:

1. Members earn miles each time they purchase an eligible published-fare ticket flying on any of the participating airline partners 2. Earn bonus miles for flying Business or First Class on any of the partner airlines 3. Members earn miles when staying at participating hotel partners 4. Earn miles when renting vehicles from participating rental companies 5. Miles can also be earned through non-travel related partners including financial and retail 6. Miles can be redeemed for a variety of travel awards around the world on participating airlines

Why wouldn't you take advantage of the American frequent flyer program when all it takes is a registration to begin earning those valuable points? With the globalization of the travel rewards schemes, it has made it easy to earn these precious miles even while your feet are firmly planted on the ground. Not everyone of course likes flying, and a great number of people join just to be able to redeem their points at participating retail institutions, or a night out at a special down town restaurant. This clever extension of the frequent flyer paradigm has allowed the airline company to make millions of dollars over the years, as well as reward customer loyalty handsomely.

There are many people who need to travel extensively for work, and for most of them the American frequent flyer points are accrued against their name and not that of their employer. This goes someway towards making airline travel just a little more bearable. For those that are in the air several times a week, they may find that in no time they will be able to qualify for elite status with American frequent flyer. This type of membership has many privileges and exclusive services and benefits and typically includes:

1. Bonus miles 2. Complimentary upgrades 3. Pre-boarding and priority seating 4. Exclusive hot-line number for reservations, seating and meal requests

At the end of a busy working day, with a long flight ahead to reach home, it is comforting to know that your processing through the airport terminal and your flight home is going to be as smooth and problem free as possible. This is what the elite status is all about. Even at this level there are various qualification entry points, providing different rewards for each.

The American frequent flyer program runs for a twelve month period and the membership year, which is the period in which the elite benefits are available, runs from March 1st through to the last day of February in the following year.

This is the area that a great many people become confused with, and due to this confusion a large number of points are never redeemed or they expire. With the American frequent flyer program, whenever you meet the standard requirement for each level, you retain that status through the year in which you qualified, as well as the next full membership year.
